EntreMed expects to have a more bioavailable form of its pipeline oncology drug Panzem to support a clinical program early next year under a supply agreement with Elan announced July 13.

Elan will reformulate Panzem and manufacture it as an oral liquid product using its NanoCrystal technology.

EntreMed is studying Panzem (2-methoxyestradiol) in a series of oncology indications. The company plans to initiate a clinical oncology program with the new formulation in early 2005.

EntreMed has completed a Phase II study in prostate cancer using the existing capsule formulation. A Phase II study in multiple myeloma is underway. The drug has also been studied in Phase I trials for advanced solid tumors and breast cancer.

Trial participants using the capsule form will be switched to the new formulation on an individual, optional basis, the company said.

EntreMed licensed Panzem to Allergan in 2002 for ophthalmologic uses.

Elan is also under contract with Lilly to manufacture Cymbalta (duloxetine) beginning in mid-2005. The user fee date for the antidepressant is Sept. 27 (¹ Also see "Cymbalta Once-Daily Dosing Not Vital To Product's Success, Lilly Suggests" - Pink Sheet, 29 June, 2004.).
