Takeda will assume complete U.S. sales and marketing control of the type 2 diabetes treatment Actos earlier than planned, the firm announced April 20.

The agreement with Lilly, which involved fees for the detailing of pioglitazone, was scheduled to end in September, but concluded prematurely because Lilly completed its detailing responsibilities ahead of schedule. Takeda and Lilly have jointly promoted Actos since the product's launch in 1999.

Takeda will also oversee U.S. marketing of Actoplus Met (pioglitazone/metformin), which was approved in August. Lilly will continue to market both in markets outside the U.S.

A second part of the arrangement, which calls for royalty fees, will continue as planned through September. A sunset period from October through the next three years will gradually decrease the royalty rate.
