FDA Chief of Staff Susan Winckler has resigned her post at the agency, allowing Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to further shape FDA under the new administration.

Appointed to the role in 2006 by former FDA commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach, Winckler coordinated staff activities in the Office of the Commissioner and served as the principal liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services.

She moved into a stronger formal role at the agency when in 2007 it reorganized and created an Office of the Chief of Staff, where Winckler served as the major point of contact between FDA centers and offices and the commissioner (¹ Also see "FDA Re-Org Makes Chief Of Staff Liaison Between Centers And Commissioner" - Pink Sheet, 3 September, 2007., p. 10).

She initially joined FDA as director for policy communications in September 2006 before becoming chief of staff in January 2007. Prior to joining the agency, Winckler served as the VP Policy and Communications and Staff Counsel for the American Pharmacists Association, where she coordinated the professional society's legislative, regulatory and private-sector advocacy agenda and public relations program.

Winckler is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and Georgetown Law School.
