The UK government has allotted funding to speed up the start of commercial clinical trials as part of a life science growth package.
The move was prompted by Lord O’Shaughnessy’s report into the life sciences sector, which makes 27 recommendations for improving the trials environment in the UK.
The package also includes measures to upgrade the UK Biobank, a biomedical database containing the genetic information of half a million UK citizens, and a new biomanufacturing fund to “incentivize investment” in the sector.
Industry has generally welcomed the package, although the ABPI said improving research was “only one part of the equation” and called for rapid agreement on a new voluntary drug pricing and access scheme.
