Over 4,400 organizations, companies and individuals have responded to a consultation on a proposal from five EU countries to restrict per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the European Economic Area.
The proposal in its current form would have an irredeemable impact on many industrial sectors, including the essential health products and technologies sectors, says EFPIA.
Analysis shows that at least 47,677 global marketing authorizations would be affected, and many products on the World Health Organization’s essential medicines list and the critical medicines lists of the EU member states could be impacted.
Without additional derogations, the entire pharmaceutical industry would no longer be able to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients (whether classified as PFAS or non-PFAS APIs) or associated medicinal products in the EEA, EFPIA warns.
The proposed restriction and responses to the consultation are now being examined by two scientific committees of the European Chemicals Agency.
Their final opinions will be sent to the European Commission, which together with the EU member states, will decide on the restriction.
