Janssen Labs

Janssen Labs opened in January 2012 and has a dozen tenants in the 30,000 square feet set aside in one of Janssen's research-and-development buildings in Torrey Pines, a location coveted by biotech companies because of its proximity to the University of California, San Diego and several research institutions.

More than 200 companies around the world have applied for spots in Janssen Labs, which offers low cost office and lab space as well as research equipment, with no strings attached between Janssen's investment in the facility and the startup firms housed in the incubator (scripintelligence.com, 20 January 2012 and 5 April 2012). A dozen companies have moved in, so far.

Dr Miralles said some of the companies in Janssen Labs have formed only because the facility was available, since the cost savings on real estate and equipment expenditures allowed the founders to fund their startups with their own money.
