A storm of obloquy from sunburned customers earlier this summer evidently has not deterred investors in The Honest Company, which plans to use capital from a $100 million financing round to launch a color-cosmetics line, as well as new skin- and hair-care items.

Announced Aug. 14, the series D financing was led by new investor Glade Brook Capital Partners. Existing investors Fidelity Management & Research Company, Wellington Management Company and Institutional Venture Partners also participated, along with new backer AllianceBernstein.

“The Honest Company provides people with effective, safe and accessible lifestyle products for healthy, happy lives. This funding will enable us to expand our current product offerings, support the upcoming launch of Honest Beauty and further our goal of bringing Honest products to a greater number of households around the world,” says co-founder and CEO Brian Lee.

Actress Jessica Alba launched Honest with Lee in 2012 as a toxin-free, socially responsible family brand, starting with 17 products. The company's portfolio has grown since to encompass more than 120 products across the personal-care, baby care, home-care and nutritional-supplements categories.

Products are sold at Honest.com and through more than 4,000 retail partners in the U.S. and Canada, including Target, Costco, Whole Foods and Nordstrom.

Existing skin-care offerings include Face + Body Lotion and Organic Body Oil, both priced at $9.95, and Healing Balm, $12.95. Hair-care items include Shampoo + Body Wash and Conditioner, which sell for $9.95 apiece, plus Conditioning Detangler, available for $5.95.

Color cosmetics will be an altogether new venture for the Santa Monica, Calif.-based company.

The product in question – which remains out of stock, according to Honest's website – was a reformulated offering introduced in early 2015. To improve the lotion's sensory appeal, the company reduced the amount of zinc oxide it contained, which may have compromised the product's effectiveness.

Honest maintained that its sunscreen was compliant with FDA regulations and standards for broad-spectrum protection, but its formulation appeared to diverge from common industry practice. Other sunscreen marketers tend to use a higher concentration of zinc oxide, compared with Honest's 9.3%, and pair the UV filter with titanium dioxide for added protection.

In addition to extending its product portfolio, Honest intends to put new funding toward global expansion and strengthened online and wholesale distribution, according to the release.
