Among nine categories of vitamin, mineral and supplement products, the researchers found 72 SAEs (35.5%) were reported with use of thermogenic fat burners, which may help slightly increase users' metabolism for a few hours,resulting in the body burning more calories even when at rest; 68 (33.5%) for non-thermogenic weight loss products (33.5%); and 39 (19.2%) products for glycemic, or blood sugar, control, (19.2%).

They also said no SAEs were reported for multivitamins, which are sold by both companies. Although the study did not include data on the number of units of multivitamins sold nor the rate of SAEs per unit sold, the researchers said the absence among the more than 40,000 reports “suggests that multivitamins have a favorable safety profile."

The numbers of SAEs associated with the other categories studied were:

digestive aids, 15;
protein supplements, 8;
central nervous system/cognitive support, 6;
essential fatty acids, 6;
pre-workout, 4;
joint health/connective tissue support, 2;
amino acid, and strength/power/anabolic support, 1 each.
