Some 22 years after founding what was one of the biggest success stories in Europe's biotech sector before a recent series of setbacks in the clinic struck, Onno van de Stolpe has decided to retire as Galapagos CEO and the search has already started for his successor.

Onno van de Stolpe, one of the highest-profile leaders in the European biotechnology space, has announced his retirement as CEO of Galapagos NV, the Belgian firm he founded over two decades ago which has lately been beset by clinical trial failures and regulatory woes in the US.

Van de Stolpe tweeted that "the time has come after 22 years" to leave the company he founded in 1999...
