In a Jan. 4 statement, CRN President and CEO Steve Mister said there is no known safety issue with creatine that would prevent healthy people from using it, but that, as with any supplement, it is to be used as part of a healthy diet and in combination with other healthy habits.

Still, “out of an overabundance of caution, some companies that manufacture creatine have noted on the product labels that it is not recommended for people under the age of 18,” he said. “This recommendation is to encourage responsible use by its consumers; this does not suggest any safety concerns.”

Mister also said attempting to ban sales of the substances to minors or pursuing other “extreme measures, such as putting something behind a counter,” will only make the products more enticing to teens and “unnecessarily limit access and availability for all consumers.”

Retailers can play an “important” role in educating teens about the proper use of products, he added.

“We urge retailers to be part of efforts to educate consumer on smart dietary supplement use, including encouraging consumers to open a dialogue with an on-staff pharmacist or registered dietitian, or their own doctor or other healthcare practitioners.”
